Grandma & Me Activity -- Need Parent Input

One of the Try-It badges the troop will be working on this year is All in The Family. We are thinking of doing a Grandma & Me Activity in which the girls would earn a special participation patch (back of the vest). To gauge whether we should go forward with this event, we need to know if each of the girls has a living grandmother.

.

Please let one of the leaders know ASAP if your daughter has a living grandma, and if any of her living grandmothers lives in Massachusetts.

Thanks

PETCO Field Trip - Parent Input Needed

The girls will be working on the Animals Try-it badge this year.
We started working on this badge at today's meeting.
It was voted the #1 badge the girls wish to accomplish this year, by the troop.

One aspect of the badge is to visit animals up close.
We are considering a field trip to PETCO in Natick.
Unfortunately, the PETCO field trips are only offered on weekdays and at night (6, 6:30, & 7:30)
The PETCO program is about 60 minutes long.
We are looking at either a 6 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. time on a Monday night (either in place of a meeting or on a Monday there is not a scheduled meeting.)
.
Please let us know ASAP if you think this late event will not work for your child.
Thanks!

Meeting #1 Summary --- Sept 22.

Today was the first Brownie meeting of the year.
The girls got reacquainted with each other and met the new girls in the troop - Erib, Tovah, & Alyssa. We are now a troop of 13 girls.
.
The girls started the meeting decorating their orange Brownie Folder. (Parents should check their child's folder when dropping off or picking up their child for important notices. Most notices will also be posted on this troop Web site.), Next, the girls did an icebreaker game within the Brownie Circle.
Afterwards the girls learned about the troop's KAPER CHART. This chart will list responsibilities (jobs) for girls in the troop each week. There are more girls than jobs, so not every girl will have a responsibility at each meeting. Jobs include reading the Girl Scout Promise, starting the Friendship Squeeze, passing out snack, cleaning up after the meeting, putting away chairs, etc. The girls began their responsibilities today.
While still in our Brownie Circle, the girls read the Girl Scout Law & Girl Scout Promise.

This year, we are introducing leadership and other social skills with the girls in the troop.
We want the girls to have a say in troop activities. To begin this process, we explained 7-8 TRY-It badge (shaped like a triangle) opportunities to the girls, giving them ideas of how the badge could be accomplished.
Afterwards, each girl took a ballot and voted on which 2 Try-its they wish to accomplish this year. We explained to the girls that the top 2 vote getters would be completed this year, among other Try-its.
Try-its the girls voted on were:
Animals - 9 votes
Brownies Through the Years - 6 votes
Dancercize - 4 votes
Let's Pretend - 3 votes
Sounds of Music - 2 votes
All in the Family - 1 vote
Caring & Sharing - 1 vote
.
The girls had snack and after snack, we announced the results of the vote.
As the Animals Try-it was voted #1, we started working on one aspect of it at the meeting.
The girls learned that animals move in different kinds of ways. We asked girls to act like an African Elephant, an Australian Kangaroo, a South American snake. Then, the girls suggest animals -- kitten, frog, puppy, chipmunk, fish, etc..
.
After this activity, the girls joined in a Friendship Circle and participated in a Friendship Squeeze. They also did an activity called 1-2-3-Girl Scout Out. (ask them about it.)

The girls requested to sing some songs next meeting -- including the Brownie Smile Song.

Today was the deadline to let one of the leaders know if your daughter plans to participate in the Science Try-it/Voting patch Workshop on Sunday, Oct. 5 from 1;30 to 4;30 p.m. The cost is $6, and we will deduct the amount from your child's activity fee. If you have not contacted a leader please do so ASAP.

Finally, please read the notices that went home today with your daughter. E-mail your responses. Feel free to contact any of us with questions.

LAST MEETING: Earlier Start Time & at Garden in the Woods!

Hard to believe that the first year of Brownies is coming to an end, but it is.
Monday is our last meeting of the year -- and our Fairy & Ice Cream Sundae Party!

SOME IMPORTANT NEWS:
1) There is an earlier than normal start --- 3:30 p.m.
2) We are meeting at Garden in the Woods in Framingham (Directions below)
3) Pick up also will be later than normal --- 6 p.m.
4) The Troop will be enjoying Ice Cream Sundaes from 5:30 to 6 p.m.
5) Each Brownie will receive her Try-its & Patches earned during the year before she leaves.

Please E-mail ASAP, if you daughter will not be attending!

About Monday's event: Garden in the Woods is running a special encore program of its sold out Fairies in the Garden program for troop 2082.
During the two-hour program, the girls will use their sharpest senses to find where tiny woodland fairies might be living in the Garden. Maybe under the Lady’s slipper orchids? Perhaps near the Fairybell wildflowers? The troop will hear a story about woodland fairies, listen to a retelling of the Brownie Elves(Fairies) tale, take a walk in the gardens to look at wildflowers with a magical fairy connection, and build a fairy house for Garden in the Woods. The girls will also do a craft to take home. Plus, as part of the garden tour, they will sample fairy treats, like tiny berries or edible floral.

The girls should wear comfortable clothes and preferrable sneakers or walking shoes.
There is no need for the girls to wear their Brownie vests.

DIRECTIONS: From Edgell Road, take a right onto Water Street and a left onto Hemenway Road.
Go north 1.0 miles (the road name changes to Eisenhower Road, but keep going).
Turn left onto Catherine, and left again on Hemenway after one block (up a one-way road) to the entrance.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at spetroni@rcn.com or at 508-620-5922

Brownie 2082 & Camping Experience Thoughts

Framingham Girl Scouts are organizing a town-wide encampment at Camp Cedar Hill in Waltham in September 19-21. The girls would check in at 5 p.m. on Friday night and check out at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
There was a cap on the number of adults, beyond the three leaders of troop 2082, who could have attended.
For that reason, we have opted NOT to be a part of encampment in September.
(Deadline to register the troop is Sunday, June 1)

Part of our decision comes from the worry that some of the girls would not be comfortable sleeping so FAR from home without a parent.

We are considering an overnight (camp-type experience indoors) at one of the museums (Museum of Science/Aquarium/etc) sometime during the 2008-2009 year BUT
perhaps even before that we would love to try a sleepover at one of the Brownie's homes.
If any parent is willing to offer up their home, please e-mail one of us.

We feel that a sleepover in a LOCAL location, close to home, would be best for the Brownies.

The museum locations, although a bit pricey, do allow for moms & daughters to attend, and are a great experience before heading to a location with little amenities and far few parents allowed.
After those two events, the girls might be okay for a one-night camp out, in a heated cabin, at a girl scout camp site in the spring.

If you have any other questions, concerns, or thoughts, please don't hesitate to e-mail one of us.
