On Sunday, Dec. 9, the sixth night of Hanukkah, Framingham Girl Scouts, including members of Brownie Troop 2082, are invited to participate in a Menorah Lighting on the Town Green with Rabbi Lazaros.
This is not an official troop 2082 event, but Brownies are encouraged to attend with their families.
Please contact one of the troop leaders by Dec. 2 to let them know if you are attending.

The public Menorah Lighting starts promptly at 4:30 p.m.
Brownies should arrive no later than 4:15 p.m.
There will also be a sing-a-long, too.

The song list is below. Please print out for your daughter to bring with her, if she can read.
If she struggles with reading; perhaps, practice singing the songs with her. before the event.

SONGS FOR THE MENORAH LIGHTING

Nun Gimmel Hay Shin

Nun Gimmel Hay Shin
Watch the dreidel spin, spin, spin
Nun Gimmel Hay Shin
Watch the dreidel spin, spin, spin ( x3 faster after each verse)
And sing along the dreidel song with me.

On This Night

On this night, let us light three little candle fire
Oh so bright, what a sight,
Three little candle fire

O Hanukkah

Oh Hanukkah, oh Hanukkah, come light the Menorah,
Let’s have a party, we’ll all dance the hora.
Gather round the table, we’ll give you a treat.
Sevivon to play with, Latkes to eat.
And while we are playing,
The candles are burning low.
One for each night, they shed a sweet light,
To remind us of days long ago;
One for each night, they shed a sweet light,
To remind us of days long ago;

Dreidel

I have a little dreidel
I made it out of clay
And when it’s dry and ready
Then dreidel I shall play.

Chorus:
Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel
I made it out of clay,
Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel
Then dreidel I shall play.

It has a lovely body,
With legs so short and thin,
And when it is all tired
It drops and then I win.

(chorus)

Dreidel, dreidel, dreidel
With legs so short and thin,
Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel
It drops and then I win.

(chorus)

My dreidel’s always playful,
It loves to dance and spin
A happy game of dreidel
Come play, now let’s begin.

Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel
It loves to dance and spin
Oh dreidel, dreidel, dreidel
Come play, now let’s begin.

This Little Light

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.
This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

All around the town, I’m gonna let it shine,
All around the town, I’m gonna let it shine,
All around the town, I’m gonna let it shine,
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Everywhere that I may go, I’m gonna let it shine,
Everywhere that I may go, I’m gonna let it shine,
Everywhere that I may go, I’m gonna let it shine,
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Ain’t nobody going to blow it out, I’m gonna let it shine,
Ain’t nobody going to blow it out, I’m gonna let it shine,
Ain’t nobody going to blow it out, I’m gonna let it shine,
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.

Brownies Invited to Sing at the 16th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Friday, Dec. 7 at 6 p.m.

The 16th Annual Framingham Holiday Tree Lighting will take place at Nevins Hall, Memorial Building (Town Hall) Friday, December 7.
The Girl Scouts of Framingham will sing on the steps of the hall from about 6:15 to 7 p.m. (when Santa arrives).
This is typically a very crowded - very hectic event.
Because of that, we are not organizing it as a Brownie troop 2082 official event;
but any Brownie from Troop 2082 that would like to participate can go with a parent and meet at the steps at 2082. Brownies must wear their vest (They should fit over their coat.).

Girl Scouts (including Brownies) should meet near the steps to the building about 6 p.m.
(At this time, none of the leaders are planning to attend. If that changes it will be posted here.)
Please bring a copy of the song sheets if your child can read it; if not PLEASE practice singing the songs with your daughter ahead of time.

This is the song list planned:

Pledge of Allegiance
This Little Light of Mine
Jingle Bells
Let It Snow
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
Frosty the Snowman

In case Santa is late:
Jingle Bell Rock
Deck the Halls
We Wish You a Merry Christmas

When Santa arrives:
Santa Claus is Coming to Town

(The songs lyrics are posted underneath this posting, so you can print off. To print only that posting; click on the headline and it will give you just that one in its own window.)

After Santa arrives and the entire group of Girl Scouts finishes singing Santa Claus is Coming to Town, the Brownies will reunite with their family members and enjoy the rest of the night's family entertainment, and food in the hall.

You may also get a photo taken with Santa for FREE - but expect a long line.

If you think you will be attending, please let one of the leaders know.

Holiday Tree Lighting SONG LYRICS

Jingle Bells
James Pierpont. Publ. 1857

Dashing through the snow
On a one-horse open sleigh,
Over the fields we go,
Laughing all the way;
Bells on bob-tail ring,
Making spirits bright,
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight.

Jingle bells, jingle bells,
Jingle all the way!
O what fun it is to ride
In a one-horse open sleigh.

Let It Snow!
SammyCahn, Jule Styne © 1945

Oh, the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful,
And since we’ve no place to go,
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

It doesn’t show signs of stopping,
And I brought some corn for popping;
The lights are turned way down low,
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

When we finally say good night,
How I’ll hate going out in the storm;
But if you really hold me tight,
All the way home I’ll be warm.

The fire is slowly dying,
And, my dear, we’re still good-bye-ing,
But as long as you love me so.
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer
Johnny Marks © 1949

You know Dasher and Dancer
And Prancer and Vixen,
Comet and Cupid
And Donner and Blitzen.
But do you recall
The most famous reindeer of all?

Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
(reindeer)
Had a very shiny nose
(like a light bulb)
And if you ever saw it
(saw it)
You would even say it glows
(like a flash light)
All of the other reindeer
(reindeer)
Used to laugh and call him names
(like Pinochio)
The never let poor Rudolph
(Rudolph)
Play in any reindeer games
(like Monopoly)

Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say
(Ho, Ho, Ho)
Rudolph with your nose so bright
Won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?
Then all the reindeer loved him
(loved him)
And they shouted out with glee
(yippee)
“Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
(reindeer)
You’ll go down in history!”
(like Columbus)

Frost the Snow Man

Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul,
With a corncob pipe and a button nose
and two eyes made out of coal.
Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale, they say
He was made of snow but the children
know how he came to life one day.
There must have been some magic in that old silk hat they found.
For when they placed it on his head
he began to dance around.
O, Frosty the snowman
was alive as he could be,
And the children say he could laugh
and play just the same as you and me.
Thumpetty thump thump,
Thumpetty thump thump,
Look at Frosty go.
Thumpetty thump thump,
Thumpetty thump thump,
Over the hills of snow.

Frost the snowman knew
the sun was hot that day,
So he said, “Let’s run and
we’ll have some fun
now before I melt away.”
Down to the village,
With a broomstick in his hand,
Running here and there all
Around the square saying,
Catch me if you can.
He led them down the streets of town
Right to the traffic cop.
And he only paused a moment when
He heard him holler “Stop!”
For Frosty the snowman
Had to hurry on his way,
But he waved goodbye saying,
“Don’t you cry,
I’ll be back again some day.”
Thumpetty thump thump,
Thumpetty thump thump,
Look at Frosty go
Thumpetty thump thump,
Thumpetty thump thump,
Over the hills of snow.

(Extra Songs)
Jingle Bell Rock
Bobby Helms

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock
Jingle bells swing and jingle bells ring
Snowing and blowing up bushels of fun
Now the jingle hop has begun

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock
Jingle bells chime in jingle bell time
Dancing and prancing in Jingle Bell square
In the frosty air.

What a bright time, it’s the right time
To rock the night away
Jingle bell time is a swell time
To go gliding in a one-horse sleigh
Giddy-up jingle horse, pick up your feet
Jingle around the clock
Mix and a-mingle in the jingling feet
That’s the jingle bell,
That’s the jingle bell,
That’s the jingle bell rock.

Deck The Halls

Deck the halls with boughs of holly
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
‘Tis the season to be jolly
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Don we now are gay apparel
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
Troll the ancient Yule-tide carol
Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la
We Wish You A Merry Christmas

We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
And a happy New Year.
Glad tidings we bring
To you and your kin;
Glad tidings for Christmas
And a happy New Year!

Santa Claus Is Coming To Town
J. Fred Coots, Henry Gillespie © 1934

You better watch out
You better not cry
Better not pout
I’m telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town

He’s making a list,
And checking it twice;
Gonna find out Who’s naughty and nice.
Santa Claus is coming to town

He sees you when you’re sleeping
He knows when you’re awake
He knows if you’ve been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake!

O! You better watch out!
You better not cry
Better not pout, I’m telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town.
Santa Claus is coming to town.

Brownies Earn Eat Right, Stay Healthy Try-It

At our last Brownie meeting on Monday, Nov. 5th, the girls earned the Try-It Eat Right, Stay Healthy. Before the meeting began, each Brownie wrote what she ate for breakfast and for lunch. In the Brownie Circle, the girls discussed nutrition and identified healthy foods. We also talked about ways to identify healthy foods. (For example, colorful foods like broccoli, apples, watermelon, are typically more healthy than non-colorful foods.) A copy of the new US nutritional guidelines and pyramid was given to each girl and we discussed what makes up the new pyramid. Each girl identified a food that is healthy in the pyramid. We also had a discussion that it is okay to dislike some healthy foods (oranges and cauliflower were the most popular), but it is important for Brownie Scouts to be courageous and try new foods.
Afterwards, the leaders taught the Brownie scouts how to read labels on food to scan for healthy ingredients and to look for unhealthy items like fat, sodium, sugar, etc..
As part of our healthy meeting, the girls ate a healthy snack, composed of cheese cubes, dried apricots, nuts, raisins, and grains.
After snack time, the leaders explained to the Brownies that they are what they eat. Each Brownie was asked to cut out healthy products from supermarket sales flyers they like and eat; and to create a "healthy body."
Below are a few photos from the project and our "healthy snack mix."

Each Brownie, at the end of the meeting, was given a copy of the U.S. Government's worksheet for kids on healthy living. The worksheet helps kids track how their food choices match up to the recommendations of MyPyramid. It also teaches kids to set goals to eat healthy food and fit in healthy activities daily. For additional copies of the worksheet, visit: http://teamnutrition.usda.gov/resources/mpk_worksheet.pdf

If your Brownie is interested in learning more about nutrition, visit the government's kids page at http://www.mypyramid.gov/kids/

Girl Scout Night At Roller Kingdom

Several members of Brownie Troop 2082 were part of the group of 120 girls who attended the Framingham-Wide Roller Skating Night at Roller Kingdom in Hudson on Saturday night, Nov. 3. The event was part of a celebration for Girl Scout Founder Juliette Low.
All of the Brownies, even those who had never put on skates before, said they had a great time. Congrats to Sydney, who won the skating race for her age category (There are a few photos of her in the race at the end of the slide show below.)

The girls who attended will get a participatory patch at a later date.

Brownies Earn 2 Try-Its at Computer & Math Workshop

85 Brownie and Junior girls attended the Framingham-wide Math & Computer Workshop event on Sunday, Oct 21 at St. Bridget School. The Brownies of Troop 2082, who attended the special event, earned 2 Try-It badges and participated in a sing-a-long led by Cadette Girl Scouts. The Brownies earned Try-It Computer Smarts & Try-It Math Fun. The girls will receive their Try-Its at a later date.
To earn the Computer Smarts Try-It, the Brownies spent some time in the computer lab exploring the Web site http://www.gogirlsonly.org/ and taking the Internet Safety Pledge.
Internet Safety Pledge
Traveling through cyberspace can be fun, but like any trip you take you have to "Be Prepared" for unforeseen things. So, read this before you go any further. Then print this page out and discuss it with your parent or guardian.
I will not give out personal information such as my address, telephone number, parents'/guardians' work address/telephone number, or the name and location of my school without my parents'/guardians' permission.
I will tell an adult right away if I come across any information that makes me feel uncomfortable.
I will never agree to get together with someone I "meet" online without first checking with my parents/guardians. If my parents/guardians agree to the meeting, I will be sure that it is in a public place and bring my parent or guardian along.
I will never send a person my picture or anything else without first checking with my parents/guardians.
I will not respond to any messages that are mean or in any way make me feel uncomfortable. It is not my fault if I get a message like that. If I do I will tell my parents/guardians right away so that they can contact the online service.
I will talk with my parents/guardians so that we can set up rules for going online. We will decide upon the time of day that I can be online, the length of time I can be online, and appropriate areas for me to visit. I will not access other areas or break these rules without their permission.

Finally, the Brownies learned to make a Computerized Kaper Chart. They were asked to plan a party and to create a computer chart to help with the details. They made a list of supplies, food, friends to invite, etc...

To earn the Try-It Math Fun, the girls solved an alphabet code, a money code, did some measuring with numbers, and created an hour glass to measure time using recycled water bottles and sand. Through these activities, Brownies from Troop 2082 learned that they use math every day -- when they count money, measure height and weight, or tell time.

Below are a few photos from the event.

Town-Wide Roller Skating Event -- UPDATE

Hi Troop 2082-

Just touching base about the rollerskating town-wide event at Roller Kingdom in Hudson.

We have 4 chaperones who will be driving and attending the event. We need to limit the number of adults, so unfortunately not all parents can attend. Also, the chaperones must be registered adult members for insurance purposes. We will coordinate carpooling once we have confirmation of who is attending. ( Of course, you are welcome to drop off you own child if you wish, but we are offering car pools to make it easier).

The $4 entrance fee will be taken out of each girl's account. If they have their own skates, please bring them. If they need to rent skates the fee is $3. Please have your child bring the money that day.

We realize the time of the event 5:30-7:30 is during most peoples dinner time. There is food being sold - pizza etc. However, it might be difficult for the girls being so young to manage money in a crowded situation. If at all posssible, please try to feed them something beforehand. The troop will be bringing cupcakes for a snack. ( unfortuantley, no outside food is permitted). If you do want your daughter to buy something, please let the chaperone driving her know so they can oversee things, so money isnt lost.

If you daughter has not signed up and still wishes to go, I need to know NO LATER than this weekend.
--- Pam

Brownie Investiture Ceremony & Girls Earn Friends Are Fun Try-It at Last Meeting

At our meeting earlier this week, the girls of Brownie Troop 2082 took part in an Brownie Investiture Ceremony and were awarded their official Brownie pin. The pins were put on upside down. The new Brownies were asked to do 3 good deeds at home, just like the Magic Elf in the Brownie Tale, in order to turn their pin right-side up.
Later during the meeting, the girls earned their Try-It Friends Are Fun. (The leaders will hand out the badge at a later date.) As a troop we had a discussion on what is a friend, how a Brownie can make new friends, and how Brownies can make other girls feel welcomed and included. Later, the girls made a a friendship card and a friendship bracelet to give to a friend or close relative. And the girls worked individually on breaking an alphabet code. (The answer was -- "Make New Friends, But Keep the Old. One is Silver and the Other is Gold."
Below are some photos from the ceremony and the arts & craft activity:

Oct. 15: Brownie Meeting & Ceremony

Just a reminder that we have a Brownie Meeting tomorrow ( 3:45-5:15 in the basement of St. Andrews).

Please have the girls wear their vest with patches and pins on it. (Shawn will be bringing newly ordered vests for Rebecca and Madison). If you need any help give me a call 508-877-3436.

Also, have the girls wear their "uniform" brown pants, skirt, skort with an off white or cream top if you have gotten one already. If not, don't stress out. (Also, Susan Petroni has size 5 velour brown pants, that Bella has outgrown, that she will bring tomorrow if anyone needs them.)

For girls that were Daisys last year, put your daisy pin and world trefoil pin (blue one) on the vest as well.

At the beginning of the meeting, we will be having a small investiture ceremony - where the girls receive their brownie pins. We welcome parents who are able to stay and watch the ceremony. If you can't be there, please know that we will take a picture of each girl.

Also, at drop off we need parents of anyone attending the math and computer workshop next weekend or rollerskating outing to sign a permission card. If you are carpooling with someone else, we can make other arrangements to sign the cards.

Lastly, since the church building is locked until we arrive and leaders need some time to get the room set up, we ask that girls don't come into the building until 3:40. If we have time to get settled, we can better greet the girls and tend to any questions all of you may have.
Thanks for your understanding.

We are excited for a fun year with the troop!
See you tomorrow

-Pam, Shawn and Susan

Brownies Earn MY BODY Try-It

At our first Brownie Meeting, Oct Monday, Oct 1, the 13 girls in the troop earned the My Body Try-It. We started the meeting, by having each girl trace her hand on a sheet of paper and write 5 things about themselves. When the girls were done with their project, they moved into the Brownie Circle where they learned about the Brownie Sign (http://brownie2082.blogspot.com/2007/10/brownie-glossary-of-terms.html). As a troop, we recited the Girl Scout Promise (http://brownie2082.blogspot.com/2007/10/girl-scout-promise.html) and and the Girl Scout Law (http://brownie2082.blogspot.com/2007/10/girl-scout-law.html) (Daisy troop members learned about the promise last year as they earned a new petal for each part of the promise. Each girl was given a copy of the Promise & Law and asked to learn them.)

In the circle, each Brownie told the others about the 5 things about themselves on their hand. (Leaders also explained to the Troop, that by tracing their hand, they were starting to earn their first TRY-IT.)
After Brownie Circle, the troop had snack; while listening to the The Brownie Story.
The girls learned that Brownies are "helpful elves."
The girls were then asked what it means to be helpful and several gave examples of how they have been helpful at home or at school.
After snack & storytime, the girls worked on tasks to complete their first TRY-IT.
They all enjoyed playing a game called "Body Volley" with balloons. Facing their partner they had to try to keep a balloon in the air using only the body part called out by a leader. For example, hands, elbow, knees, etc. Afterwards, the girls took turns calling out body parts while playing.
Following the Body Volley game, the girls learned about how their muscles work. Each girl was partnered with another Brownie. One girl kept her arms straight down by her side. While that girl tried to lift her arms up, her partner held her arms down. After counting to 20, the girls stopped holding their partner's arms and learned that muscles would continue to work on a process even after a process had stopped (The girls arms involuntarily were rising.)
Then, the Brownies had a discussion about how to take care of themselves. Some of the girls suggested eating healthy, exercising, brushing hair, brushing teeth, taking a shower etc. From there, the troop played a game of exercise. A leader would call out a type of exercise (galloping, hopping, frog jumping, crab crawling, etc) and the girls would do it. Later, the girls were asked to create their own type of exercise to call out. One example, was Jumping Jacks.
Finally, the girls returned to the Brownie Circle where we participated in a Friendship Circle and did the Friendship Squeeze. Just before the meeting ended, each girl was given her Brownie vest and several patches. (To learn where to put each patch, visit http://brownie2082.blogspot.com/2007/10/brownie-uniform.html)
Below are a few photos from our first meeting. We are putting a photo of each girl and her personalized handprint in a troop scrapbook.

Make New Friends -- Brownie Song

Make new friends,
but keep the old.
One is silver,
the other is gold.

A circle is round,
it has no end.
That's how long,
I will be your friend.

BROWNIE SMILE SONG

I’ve got something in my pocket, it belongs across my face,
I keep it very close at hand, in a most convenient place.
I’m sure you couldn’t guess it, if you guessed a long, long while
So, I’ll take it out and put it on, it’s a great big brownie smile!

Brownie Try-It: Girl Scout Ways

Members of Troop 2082, who were Daisy Scouts last year, earned the Brownie Try-It "Girl Scout Ways" when they attended a joint Daisy-Brownie meeting during the spring of 2007.
At the end of that meeting, the girls were given this badge (pictured).
This Try-It should be earned by each new Brownie. Brownies may earn the Girl Scout Ways Try-It by completing 3 of the 5 items below.
Parents should sign off on each item completed and return a sheet to one of the troop leaders with written confirmation of each task completed. Please contact any of the tri-leaders with questions.
#1. The Girl Scout Law
Create a puppet show, coloring book, poem, or play that tells about two parts of the Girl Scout Law. Show it to other Girl Scouts or to girls who want to become Girl Scouts.

I've got something in my pocket that belongs across my face.I keep it very close to me in a most convenient place.I bet you couldn't guess it if you guessed a long, long while...So I'll take it out and put it on, it's a great big Brownie smile!

#3. S'Mores
A S'more is a special sweet treat that Girl Scouts love to make. You might want to try it on a camping trip or at a cookout. Do you know why they're called S'mores?
You will need:
Graham Crackers
Large Marshmallows
Milk Chocolate Bars
A long stick or roasting wire to hold over the fire
1. Break the chocolate bar so that it is the same size as the graham cracker or smaller. Put the chocolate on top of the graham cracker.2. Put on or two marshmallows on the end of the stick.3. Use the stick to hold the marshmallows over the fire, but not too close!4. When the marshmallows start to melt just a little, take them off the stick and put them on top of the chocolate bar square.5. Put another graham cracker on top of the marshmallows.6. Eat It! And you'll want s'more!!
Note: Whenever you are using fire in the outdoors, in a fireplace, or anywhere else, you must have an adult helping you!
#4. Sit-Upon
Girl Scouts make sit-upons to use when the ground is damp or too hot or cold, or they want to keep their clothes clean. You can make your own to use at troop meetings, camping events, or other Girl Scout get-togethers. Follow these steps to make yours:
You will need:
A large piece of waterproof material (like an old plastic tablecloth, shower curtain, or plastic garbage bag)
Newspapers or other stuffing
A yarn needle
Yarn or string
1. Cut the waterproof material into two large squares big enough for you to sit on.2. Put newspapers or old rags between the two squares to form a cushion3. Sew the two squares together with yarn or string, using the yarn needle. Have an adult show you how to use the needle safely. Be sure to sew completely around the edges of the sit-upon.
#5. Be Prepared
Girl Scouting's motto is: "Be Prepared!"
Talk with other Girl Scouts about how you can help your troop or group, school, family, and friends for two or three of the situations below:
Bad Weather
A house fire
The power goes out
An injury like a cut or fall
A long trip
What other situations should you and your family prepare for?
