RSVP by 10/29 for Framingham Tree Lighting on Dec. 12

The Framingham Tree Lighting is planned for Friday, Dec. 12 at about 6 p.m.
Girl Scouts typically do a holiday sing-a-long on the steps of Town Hall awaiting the arrival of Santa. Afterwards, the girls can head inside for hot cocoa, cookies, and to listen to the all-elementary school band, among other activities.
.
I know this seems very early, but the Framingham Service Unit for Girl Scouts needs to give an estimated count to the town next week.
We would like to make this a family event. The girls can stand on the steps singing with their fellow Brownie troop members with the rest of the Girl Scouts from Framingham, but as the event is popular and crowded, we would prefer that each girl attend with a guardian or a parent.
Last year, Kelly & Bella from Troop 2082 participated.
Girls who sing can earn a participation patch (for the back of their vest.)
.
The deadline to let a leader know your daughter's intent to participate is:
Wednesday, Oct. 29 by 7 p.m.
.
It's okay if your daughter changes her mind -- to go or not to go -- or if another family obligation comes up, we just wish to give the town an idea if our troop is participating.
.
Lyrics to the songs will be posted before the event.
.

Our Troop Number has Changed - #72082

With the merger of three Girl Scout councils into one - Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts, there is the possibility of an overlapping of troop numbers.
For that reasons, former members of the Girls Scouts of Patriot's Trail Council will now have a "7" in front of their troops.
.
We are not adding the "7" on to the Brownie uniforms, but will do so when the girls move into Junior Scouts in fourth grade.
.
However, our new bank account is set up as Troop #72082.
As we move ahead please write any checks to "GSEM Brownie Troop #72082."
.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact one of the three troop leaders.
.

Brownies NOT Eligible for Boston Ballet Workshops

We just found out today, that although the Boston Ballet workshops are listed in the program book as open to all Girl Scouts including Brownies, the the workshops are for girls Cadette level or older. Brownies can not attend!
We apologize.

Grandma & Me Patch Requirements/Homework

The girls in Brownie Troop 2082 will be working on a participation patch called Grandma & Me. We talked about the patch at the last meeting on Oct. 20. (The patch, which will go on the back of the vest, is pictured here.) To earn the patch, the girls will need to complete 3 of the 6 items below by the Monday, Dec. 8 meeting. At that meeting, the girls will share the information they have learned. (We set this deadline, as it will give Brownies with grandmas, living close by, the opportunity to talk to a grandma in person during the Thanksgiving holiday.) NOTE: Three of the items can be completed even if your daughter doesn’t have a living grandma or has one who lives far away.
.
1. Scrapbook Memories! Find a photo of your grandmother or a photo of you and your grandmother doing a favorite activity or celebrating a holiday. Make a scrapbook page about your grandma. On the page write about why you love(d) your grandmother and/or what was your favorite thing to do with your grandmother. … (FOR EXAMPLE: At the Oct 20th meeting, leader Susan Petroni brought in a photo of her and her late grandma on a Tilt-A-Whirl at an amusement park when she was about the same age as the girls in our Brownie troop. She told the girls she would write about how her grandmother like to go to amusement parks with her and ride the spin rides.)
.
2. Create a Family Tree! Find out when your parents and siblings were born. Research when your grandparents were born. (Optional: If you want, try to research back to find out who your grandparents’ grandmothers and grandfathers were.)
.
3. Musical bonding – I bet you listen to the Jonas Brothers, Music from the High School Musical movies, Hannah Montana, etc… That music is cool today. But what music did your grandmother think was cool when she was your age. Find out what music she loved. Listen to a few of her favorite songs. Have her listen to a few of your favorite songs. (If your grandmother is not around, research popular music from when she was your age and listen to 2-3 songs). Make a list of those songs from your grandmother’s era or her favorite songs as part of this patch requirement.
.
4. Uncover Facts About Your Grandmother – Find out more about your grandmother and her life. Interview her (or if your grandmother is not around interview a family member who may be able to answer these questions for you.) Get answers for 6 of these questions below.
A. Did you have a pet when you were growing up?
B. Who was more strict, your mom or dad?
C. Did you have chores?
D. Were you a Brownie or a Girl Scout?
E. Did you have brothers or sisters? How many?
F. Where did your live? What was your house like?
G. Tell me about a family Tradition
H. Did you like school? Favorite subject? Worst?
I. Tell me about Mom or dad growing up. How was s(he) like me? Not like me?
J. What are you most proud about in your life?
K. Tell me about a vacation or place your visited.
L. What is your favorite food? Food you don’t like?
M. What special talent do you have? (sports, crafts, cooking, etc)?
.
5. Saying Nonna or Oma! Below is a list of words kids use for grandparents in other countries. Learn to say grandma and grandpa in a language that is of the same heritage of your parents/grandparents.
· Poland -- Babcia and Dziadek,
· Germany -- Oma and Opa,
· India -- Nana-ji and Nani-ji,
· Greece -- Ya-ya and Pa-pu,
· Japan -- Oba-chan and Oji-chan,
· China -- Popo and Gong-gong,
· Italy -- Nonna and Nonno,
· Israel -- Savta and Saba,
· Spain – Abuela and Abuelo.
.
6. Grandma Literature! Pick one of the books below and either read with your parent or perhaps read with your grandmother. For each book there is a question for you to think about and answer.

A. Read the book Hooray for Grandparents.
Quick synopsis: What can a boy do when Grandparents' Day at school rolls around and he has no grandparents to invite? Arnie is very upset, won't help the other children decorate the room, and goes off grumpily to return his library books. Carlson, in the voice of a caring children's librarian, suggests using his neighbors as stand-ins. Unfortunately, Arnie's next-door neighbors are off to climb Mt. Fuji and won't be back for two weeks. He tells this sad story to everyone he knows, including the bakers, the dressmaker, and the sensitive librarian. Much to his surprise, they all show up at school, making Arnie the child with the most visitors and the happiest face.
After reading the book, write a sentence or two about what you would invite to a grandparent & Brownie activity, if your grandma or a grandparents wasn’t available?

B. Read the book The Berenstain Bears and the Week at Grandma's
After reading, write a sentence or two about what special things you would like to do if you could spend an entire week at grandma’s house.

C. Read the book The Patchwork Quilt.
Quick synopsis:
Grandma has an idea. When she was a little girl her own mother made her a beautiful patchwork quilt. Her granddaughter begins to show interest in Grandma's quilting. Anytime a family member has a special outfit that they have grown out of or a beloved piece of clothing, that can’t be worn, Grandma's adds a patch to the quilt.
After reading, write a sentence or two about what special activity or hobby grandma did or does that you would like to try. (Optional: consider starting a family memory quilt too.)
Note: If you struggle with reading the book, ask a parent or older relative to read the book with you.
.
If you have any questions about this homework, please contact one of the leaders. Contact info is on the right-hand column of this Web site.

Troop Meeting #3 Summary -- 10/20/08

We welcomed two new girls to Brownie Troop 2082 today - Ayuski & Sagan. We are now a troop of 16 girls. During today's meeting, we had an investiture & Brownie Elf Ceremony with the 6 new girls to the troop. Each of the 6 new girls received a Brownie pin. They are to wear it upside down until they complete three good deeds for someone. Each of the girls was also sent home with a copy of the Brownie Story.
.
As we moved our meeting time back this year to 4:15 p.m., we opted this week to do snack first.
During snack time, each of the five girls who attended Girl Scout Night at the circus mentioned one thing they enjoyed about the night. (See previous posting about the event and photos.)
We also talked to the girls about The Cheetah Girls. Almost all of the Brownies knew about the teen pop group. We mentioned The Cheetah Girls to the troop, as Cheetah Girl Adrienne Balion was a Girl Scout. She is the cover girl for the Fall issue of Girl Scout Leader magazine. Born in Puerto Rico, but raised in New York, Adrienne was a Girl Scout for 6 years. She said Girl Scouts encouraged her to trust her passions. "I was always coming up with these outrageous ideas. But somehow in Girl Scouts, they didn't sound so crazy," she told Girl Scout Leader magazine. She also said Girl Scouts allowed her the opportunity to connect her creative drive with her desire to do good. (FYI: The Cheetah Girls are performing a concert in Worcester on Nov. 7. Unfortunately, there is no Girl Scout discount for this tour. It is the group's only Massachusetts stop. Tickets are still available, if interested)
To read the full story on Adrienne and or see the videos with your daughter, visit www.girlscouts.org/for_adults/leader_magazine/
.
After snack, the troop went into its Brownie Circle. Bella read the Promise and Jessica read the the Girl Scout Law. Then, we told the girls about the planned field trip on Nov. 3 to PETCO. We explained the field trip will be a part of what is needed to earn the Animals Try-It. After a discussion about what to expect on the field trip, we went around the circle and each Brownie mentioned what pet(s) they have (or had as we heard several fish died) and what pet they would like to have. We also talked about why some Brownies can't get the pet they want --- perhaps, the home is not a suitable habitat for the pet or perhaps a family member has an allergy.
.
After Circle time, the troop took part in the Investiture Ceremony. Girls who were Brownies last year, helped "twist & turn" the new Brownies. (See slide show. Click on VIEW ALL IMAGES to see the full view of each photo.)
.

.
Next, the girls were given three activity sheets provided by PETCO.
.

.
Then, we re-entered the Brownie Circle.
We explained to the girls, for the first time we would be giving out "Brownie Homework." The information for the All in the Family Try-It homework went home with your child. (It will also be posted on this Web site.) The All in the Family homework is due at the next meeting on Nov. 10.
The homework information to earn the special Grandma & Me participation patch (back of the vest) will be posted on this Web site later this week and an e-mail sent to parents. When it is posted on the Web site, it will be written and directed towards the Brownies. (It was about 3 pages to print and at 16 girls, we were trying to save a few trees.). It is not due until after Thanksgiving! The patch can be completed even if a brownie does not have a living grandmother or if the living grandmother lives far away.
If you have any questions, or if your daughter has any questions, please e-mail one of the leaders.
.
If any parent did not sign a permission slip for either the Roller Skating event (Nov. 1.) or the PETCO field trip (Nov. 3.) Please contact leader Pam ASAP.
.
We will be contacting the parents of those girls attending the Framingham-wide Girl Scout Roller Skating night via e-mail about carpooling. Thanks for those who offered to carpool and chaperone!
.
Today was the deadline to participate in the optional magazine and/or candy & nut sales.
Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts will receive 40% of each magazine sold.
Troop 2082 will earn 10% from each magazine sold.
Troop 2082 will also receive $1 for each box of candy or nuts sold.
Girls who sold either two magazine or two boxes of candy or nuts will receive a special polar bear patch. Troop 2082 members who participated in the sale were: Bella, Emily D., Erin, Madison, Talia, & Tovah. Some girls earned more than 1 patch (back of the best).
I will post at a later time how much the troop earned!
.
One last thing, consider logging on to this Web site with your daughter. Let her look at the photos posted and or read the story on Cheetah Girl Adrienne.
.
Happy Halloween and see you in November!!!

.

FIELD TRIP to PETCO on Monday, Nov. 3

Brownie Troop 2082 will be taking a field trip to PETCO (located in the Christmas Tree plaza on Route 9) on Monday night, Nov. 3 from 6 to 7 p.m.
Girls should meet in front of PETCO no later than 5:45 p.m. They should wear their Brownie vest.
Parents can drop off and pick up at PETCO.
This 60-minute workshop on pets is one of the 4 requirements for the Brownies to earn their Animals Try-It badge. (FYI: There is no school on Nov. 4 for Framingham Public School children due to election day! Thus, one of the reasons we picked this date.)

INFORMATION ABOUT THE PETCO FIELD TRIP: This field trip introduces simple concepts related to animal characteristics, animal habitats, and animal care. During this hands-on experience, Brownies will discover animals are a lot like people. They both need a healthy diet, a comfortable home, social interaction, exercise and play. Respect and responsibility lessons are reinforced throughout the tour.

We need a signed permission slip from a parent/guardian for your daughter to attend. The group is limited to what we registered for 16 girls and 3 adults. No siblings allowed. Permission slips must be presented or she can not participate.
Please let one of the leaders know, via e-mail or phone no later than Nov. 1

If your daughter cannot attend on Nov. 3. We will provide you with a list of suitable options for you and your daughter to do on your own, so she can still earn her Animals TRY-it!

Earn a Special FETCH! Participation Patch at Children's Museum in Easton!

Brownies can earn a chance to feel like FETCH! contestants (characters in a popular PBS TV show) and along the way earn a FETCH! Patch (for the back of their vest)!
The Children's Museum in Easton is offering the special patch program.
The hands-on FETCH! activities extend the science and engineering learning introduced during the WGBH/PBS show. Brownies will tackle challenges, solve problems, and devise creative solutions while doing hands-on activities that require easy-to-find materials.
The Museum's talented educators are experienced in all the FETCH! activities and make earning the FETCH! Patch a breeze for you and your Troop.
.
If you think your daughter is interested in this special program, perhaps we can arrange a Troop outing. Whether we go, will depend on scheduling and the number of girls interested.
If that doesn't work out, perhaps we can contact the Museum about an individual visit.

Girl Scout Night at the Circus with Troop 2082!

Five Brownies from Troop 2082 attended Girl Scout Night at the Ringling Bros. Circus on Friday night. They were - Becky, Bella, Erin, Madison & Talia. (Erin's friend Brianna from Troop 2241 in Holliston also joined our troop.)
Each Brownie attended a special animal care seminar featuring horses and Asia the elephant. The seminar was an exclusive for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.
Afterwards, the girls took part in a pre-show where they got to see the performers up close including a dog show, aerialists, clowns, and jugglers; get autographs; and try on very ornate and heavy circus costumes. Talia was featured on the Jumbotron during the pre-show with her red clown nose all the girls received. All the Brownies also received a special patch for the back of their vest featuring Bello the clown and a white tiger.
Despite our sky-high seats in the first half, the girls had a fabulous time!

Helping Hands Project & Meeting #2 Summary

We welcomed a new girl to the troop today - Sasha. We are now a troop of 15 girls.
We hope to have an investiture & Brownie Elf Ceremony with the new troop members soon.
.
Hope you enjoyed your daughter's gift today. Below are a few photos from today's arts & crafts session. As part of our meeting the girls made "Helping Hands" for family members. This arts & crafts activity was just one part of the girls working towards earning their All in the Family Try-it.
The girls also talked more about the voting process. At our last meeting, the troop voted on Try-its they wish to complete this year. Today, the troop voted on "Troop Rules."
Rules set were:
* Be Nice to Each & Every Brownie (Girl Scout)
* Listen to the leaders
* Respect others when talking and during activities
* Share with others when working with art supplies
* Wear Brownie Vest when in public & on field trips
* Try Your Best!
The Girls were told that as part of our regular Brownie Circle at each meeting they can suggest new Troop Rules. Talking and voting on Troop Rules helped the girls complete a component of the Citizen Near & Far Try-It. There are a few more components needed before they earn the Try-it.
The girls sang the Make New Friends and the Brownie Smile Song this afternoon.
We also talked about the upcoming Roller Skating event. The deadline to let a leader know you daughter will be attending is Tuesday, Oct. 14.
The 11 girls who attended the special Science Workshop on Sunday were given there Science In Action Try-It. today. Brownies, who earned the Games Around the World Try-It last year, were also given that badge today.
