Meeting Monday -- Update on projects
Our next Brownie troop meeting is Monday at 4:15 at St. Andrew. We will be continuing our work on the All in the Family Try-it.
At our last meeting, 14 of the 16 girls presented their heritage item to the troop. The last two girls will present their heritage item Monday, the girls will begin work on a family birthday calendar, and if time permits we will start a family time capsule.
NEEDS: If you have extra family photographs that can be CUT, please have your daughter bring them to Monday's meeting so she can use with the family calendar craft. Individual photos of each immediate family member are better than a large group of people in a photo. Those girls who brought their photos at the last meeting, we saved them in her folder.
For the time capsule, we are looking for each girl to bring in an empty cereal box (ie Wheaties, Corn Flags, Fruit Loops, etc). The cereal box will be the capsule for that project. If you don't have a box for Monday's meeting, please try to bring a box for the first meeting in December. The girls will be working on the time capsule for likely two meetings.If you still don't have a cereal box and don't anticipate having one, please let a leader know as we can have extras brought in..

SPECIAL EVENT: Don't forget the Museum of Science checks, if you daughter wishes to participate. It is $47 for her and $47 for an adult. Please make checks out to GSEM Troop #72082..
FUNDRAISER: Packaged candy & nut boxes & cans will be distributed to those who participated in the fundraiser at the end of the meeting. Patches and prizes are still not available..
PATCH WORK: The Grandma & Me requirement work is not due until the first meeting in December. If your daughter has already completed her work, she can bring it to Monday's meeting and we will store it in her folder. The Grandma & Me patch requirement work is posted on this site.
SNACK MOM: Finally, please note that there is a girl in the troop who has an allergy to walnuts, cashews, almonds, tree nuts, etc. So when sending in snack for the troop please read labels. A list of who has which meeting for snack is located on the right-hand side of the site.

Special Event: Museum of Science Sleepover in June
For our BIG event this year, Troop 2082 is planning on participating in the Girl Scout Sleepover at the Museum of Science on Saturday, June 6.
* As some of the girls in the troop may be uncomfortable with a sleepover that far from home by themselves, we PURPOSELY selected the sleepover that is Mom & Me. That means that every girl attending can bring their mom (or an adult FEMALE relative/guardian 19 or older). YET, an adult is not required to attend for your child to go, as all 3 leaders will be attending. No siblings can attend. No males can attend.
* This special GS night event typically includes hands-on science activities, science demonstrations, an Omni show, a late night program, and plenty of time to explore the museum.
* We realize this event is expensive, especially in this economy.
The cost is $47 per child and $47 per adult.
As leaders, we would like to subsidize the cost of your daughter to attend up to $20 per Brownie based on HER cookie sales/effort this spring. (If your daughter signs up, we will add UP TO $20 BACK into her activity fund in spring 2009.)
* Unfortunately, these Museum of Science sleepovers fill up quickly and typically sell out. Most of the events are already sold out through mid-March.
** For that reason, we are asking if your child is interested in attending with or without an adult; we NEED a check Monday (at our meeting), so we can start the registration process. (Please make checks out to GSEM Brownie Troop #72082). As the event is sponsored by Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts WE can only hold a spot, if registration is paid in full.
Again, we realize this is an expensive event, but it will be our one big TROOP event for the year.
FYI: Dinner is on your own that night (June 6) and there is a $5 per car parking fee for keeping a car overnight in the garage.

Troop Meeting #4 Summary -- 11/10/08
During today's meeting, after snack, the troop went into its Brownie Circle.Tovah read the Promise and Erin read the the Girl Scout Law.
Then, we told the Brownies that at the end of the meeting we would pass out participation patches (back of the vest). Every girl earned at least one patch (Investiture patch pictured) but some earned as many as 4 patches. (see previous post for more details about the participation patches.)
We also announced that the Troop earned more than $130 from its magazine & candy/nut sales this fall. Seven girls participated in the fundraiser. The candy & nuts are due to arrive later this week or early next week. Worst case, the candy & nuts will be distributed at our next Brownie meeting on Monday, Nov. 24th. (We anticipate the participation patches & incentives will be available at that time too.)
While in the Brownie Circle, the girls talked about their family heritage. Each girl talked about where their mother, father, and or grandparents' ancestors were from. The girls also showed a heritage item (jewelry, clothing, doll, etc) to the Troop.
As the girls were very excited about this part of the All in the Family Try-It, we did not have time to work a lot on their calendar arts & crafts project. The girls will complete the project at the next meeting on Nov. 24th. (During the next 2 weeks, feel free to find and send to the meeting additional cutable photos of family members so the girls can use then with their birthday calendar project.) The birthday list and photos the girls did bring in we saved in their orange folders.
NOTE: The Grandma & Me Participating Patch work is not due until the first meeting in December. Remember this is an optional patch for your daughter to earn. The girls will be discussing what they learned about their grandmas at that December meeting.
Directions and information on the patch work was posted earlier on this Web site.
The patch can be completed even if a Brownie does not have a living grandmother or if the living grandmother lives far away.

Participation Patches Awarded to Girls Today!
We handed out participation patches to the girls today. Some Brownies took home as many as 4 patches, but every girl earned at least 1 patch. ** All 16 girls earned the Investiture patch. It should be ironed on to the back of the vest. It is a large square patch with two girls in Brownie vests. It is an iron-on patch.
** 13 girls earned the roller skating participation patch. It is an iron-on patch for the back of the vest, too. (see photo of patch in an earlier post.)
** Girls, who were Brownies last year, earned the Early bird participation patch for registering for a second year of Brownies earlier this spring. It too is an iron-on patch for the back of the vest.
** Finally, 11 Brownies who attended the special science/voting workshop received their voting participation patches. (The science patches were handed out earlier.) The VOTING patch is for back of the vest. Unfortunately, it is NOT an iron-on patch. It was not available as an iron-on. The patch will need to be either sewed on or you can try using patch-attach glue (sold at craft stores) to glue (let glue dry first) & then iron it on. If you have any questions, please don't hestitate to contact any of us leaders.

Meeting Tomorrow
Hi Troop 2082-
Just a reminder that we have regular Brownie Meeting tomorrow ( 4:15-5:30).
Reminder - we will be working on the 'All in the Family" Try-It patch so the girls need to bring in-
1) List of family member's birthdays (Month and date) to include on the calender.
Photos of family members that will be cut up and added to the calender are optional.
2) Discuss at home your family heritage- What state / country your family is from and where your ancestors are from. Bring an item to share that represents something about your heritage. It can be clothing, pictures, object, food (no nuts or strawberries please) etc.
This should be a fun meeting ! See you all tomorrow!

There are a couple of moms (Jessica, Sasha, Sagan, & Tovah) who have yet to sign up for a week. Please contact one of the leaders so we can add you to the list.

Snack moms are asked to provide a drink and a snack per Brownie.
There are 16 girls in the troop, so please consider juice boxes or a gallon of something, when it is your week, so the girls have enough to drink.
Also we have one child who has a tree nut, walnut, pecan allergy so read labels when sending a snack.
Healthy snacks are always encouraged, but we won't say no to sweets. If you send something sweet, please also consider a healthy snack like apple slices, cheese cubes, pretzels, etc..

Girl Scout Night at Roller Kingdom
More than 100 Girl Scouts from Framingham attending GS Night at Roller Kingdom last night, including 13 girls from Brownie Troop 2082. The annual event celebrates the birthday of Girl Scout founder Juliette Low, whose birthday is Halloween.
About two dozen girls also participated in karaoke, including Bella from our Brownie troop. She did a rendition of Disturbia.
Girls who attended will receive a participation patch. The leaders will get them Tuesday night at the Framingham leaders meeting.

Eastern Massachusetts Council to Offer Dancing with the Scouts on Sunday, Dec. 14
Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts Council is offering "Dancing with the Scouts" on Sunday, Dec. 14 in Waltham.
There will be two sessions -- 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Brownies will learn about different styles of Latin dance. A professional dance instructor will give the girls a demo, and then it's their turn to take the floor!
Girls will learn the steps of beautiful styles of dance.
Cost is $13 per brownie. Adult/parents are free.
Registration is as soon as the event fills up or up until Nov. 25.

RSVP by 10/29 for Framingham Tree Lighting on Dec. 12
The Framingham Tree Lighting is planned for Friday, Dec. 12 at about 6 p.m.
Girl Scouts typically do a holiday sing-a-long on the steps of Town Hall awaiting the arrival of Santa. Afterwards, the girls can head inside for hot cocoa, cookies, and to listen to the all-elementary school band, among other activities.

I know this seems very early, but the Framingham Service Unit for Girl Scouts needs to give an estimated count to the town next week.
We would like to make this a family event. The girls can stand on the steps singing with their fellow Brownie troop members with the rest of the Girl Scouts from Framingham, but as the event is popular and crowded, we would prefer that each girl attend with a guardian or a parent.
Last year, Kelly & Bella from Troop 2082 participated.

Our Troop Number has Changed - #72082
With the merger of three Girl Scout councils into one - Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts, there is the possibility of an overlapping of troop numbers.
For that reasons, former members of the Girls Scouts of Patriot's Trail Council will now have a "7" in front of their troops.

We are not adding the "7" on to the Brownie uniforms, but will do so when the girls move into Junior Scouts in fourth grade.

Brownies NOT Eligible for Boston Ballet Workshops
Apparently, there were several errors in the program book mailed to leaders and registered adult volunteers.
We just found out today, that although the Boston Ballet workshops are listed in the program book as open to all Girl Scouts including Brownies, the the workshops are for girls Cadette level or older. Brownies can not attend!

RI Girl Scouts Offering Brownies A Hip Hop Dance Workshop on Thursday, Dec. 4
Girl Scouts of Rhode Island are offering Brownies the chance to participate in a Hip Hop Dance Event. Brownies can learn how to Hip Hop from a professional instructor.
The event is Thursday, December 4, from 4;30 to 6:30 p.m. at Camp Promising in Swansea. (Located near Fall River, about 60-75 minutes from Framingham)
Cost is $11 per Brownie.
Deadline to register is Thursday, Nov. 13.
NOTE: As it is unlikely a leader will be attending. Your daughter will need to register as an individual Scout. A parent or guardian will need to attend with her. If the situation changes, we will let you know if a leader is attending this optional event.
If your daughter would like to attend, please let one of the leaders know no later than the troop's Nov. 10 meeting, so they can help you with the registration process.

Grandma & Me Patch Requirements/Homework
The girls in Brownie Troop 2082 will be working on a participation patch called Grandma & Me. We talked about the patch at the last meeting on Oct. 20. (The patch, which will go on the back of the vest, is pictured here.) To earn the patch, the girls will need to complete 3 of the 6 items below by the Monday, Dec. 8 meeting. At that meeting, the girls will share the information they have learned. (We set this deadline, as it will give Brownies with grandmas, living close by, the opportunity to talk to a grandma in person during the Thanksgiving holiday.) NOTE: Three of the items can be completed even if your daughter doesn’t have a living grandma or has one who lives far away..
1. Scrapbook Memories! Find a photo of your grandmother or a photo of you and your grandmother doing a favorite activity or celebrating a holiday. Make a scrapbook page about your grandma. On the page write about why you love(d) your grandmother and/or what was your favorite thing to do with your grandmother. … (FOR EXAMPLE: At the Oct 20th meeting, leader Susan Petroni brought in a photo of her and her late grandma on a Tilt-A-Whirl at an amusement park when she was about the same age as the girls in our Brownie troop. She told the girls she would write about how her grandmother like to go to amusement parks with her and ride the spin rides.)

2. Create a Family Tree! Find out when your parents and siblings were born. Research when your grandparents were born. (Optional: If you want, try to research back to find out who your grandparents’ grandmothers and grandfathers were.)

3. Musical bonding – I bet you listen to the Jonas Brothers, Music from the High School Musical movies, Hannah Montana, etc… That music is cool today. But what music did your grandmother think was cool when she was your age. Find out what music she loved. Listen to a few of her favorite songs. Have her listen to a few of your favorite songs. (If your grandmother is not around, research popular music from when she was your age and listen to 2-3 songs). Make a list of those songs from your grandmother’s era or her favorite songs as part of this patch requirement.

Fuji and won't be back for two weeks. He tells this sad story to everyone he knows, including the bakers, the dressmaker, and the sensitive librarian. Much to his surprise, they all show up at school, making Arnie the child with the most visitors and the happiest face.
After reading the book, write a sentence or two about what you would invite to a grandparent & Brownie activity, if your grandma or a grandparents wasn’t available?
B. Read the book The Berenstain Bears and the Week at Grandma's
After reading, write a sentence or two about what special things you would like to do if you could spend an entire week at grandma’s house.
C. Read the book The Patchwork Quilt.
Quick synopsis: Grandma has an idea. When she was a little girl her own mother made her a beautiful patchwork quilt. Her granddaughter begins to show interest in Grandma's quilting. Anytime a family member has a special outfit that they have grown out of or a beloved piece of clothing, that can’t be worn, Grandma's adds a patch to the quilt.
After reading, write a sentence or two about what special activity or hobby grandma did or does that you would like to try. (Optional: consider starting a family memory quilt too.)
Note: If you struggle with reading the book, ask a parent or older relative to read the book with you.

The Girl Scout Council of Rhode Island is offering a special ZOOM program for Brownies. Attendees will participate in ZOOM science activities that are interactive and hands-on. The workshop will introduce science and math concepts by showing girls how science works in the real world. Attendees will earn a ZOOM fun patch (for back of the vest).
The program is on Saturday, Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. to noon at Camp Promising Acres in Swansea. (Located near Fall River, about 60-75 minutes from Framingham)

Troop Meeting #3 Summary -- 10/20/08
We welcomed two new girls to Brownie Troop 2082 today - Ayuski & Sagan. We are now a troop of 16 girls. During today's meeting, we had an investiture & Brownie Elf Ceremony with the 6 new girls to the troop. Each of the 6 new girls received a Brownie pin. They are to wear it upside down until they complete three good deeds for someone. Each of the girls was also sent home with a copy of the Brownie Story..
As we moved our meeting time back this year to 4:15 p.m., we opted this week to do snack first.
During snack time, each of the five girls who attended Girl Scout Night at the circus mentioned one thing they enjoyed about the night. (See previous posting about the event and photos.)
We also talked to the girls about The Cheetah Girls. Almost all of the Brownies knew about the teen pop group. We mentioned The Cheetah Girls to the troop, as Cheetah Girl Adrienne Balion was a Girl Scout. She is the cover girl for the Fall issue of Girl Scout Leader magazine. Born in Puerto Rico, but raised in New York, Adrienne was a Girl Scout for 6 years. She said Girl Scouts encouraged her to trust her passions. "I was always coming up with these outrageous ideas. But somehow in Girl Scouts, they didn't sound so crazy," she told Girl Scout Leader magazine. She also said Girl Scouts allowed her the opportunity to connect her creative drive with her desire to do good. (FYI: The Cheetah Girls are performing a concert in Worcester on Nov. 7. Unfortunately, there is no Girl Scout discount for this tour. It is the group's only Massachusetts stop. Tickets are still available, if interested)

After snack, the troop went into its Brownie Circle. Bella read the Promise and Jessica read the the Girl Scout Law. Then, we told the girls about the planned field trip on Nov. 3 to PETCO. We explained the field trip will be a part of what is needed to earn the Animals Try-It. After a discussion about what to expect on the field trip, we went around the circle and each Brownie mentioned what pet(s) they have (or had as we heard several fish died) and what pet they would like to have. We also talked about why some Brownies can't get the pet they want --- perhaps, the home is not a suitable habitat for the pet or perhaps a family member has an allergy.

After Circle time, the troop took part in the Investiture Ceremony. Girls who were Brownies last year, helped "twist & turn" the new Brownies. (See slide show. Click on VIEW ALL IMAGES to see the full view of each photo.)

Next, the girls were given three activity sheets provided by PETCO.

Then, we re-entered the Brownie Circle.
We explained to the girls, for the first time we would be giving out "Brownie Homework." The information for the All in the Family Try-It homework went home with your child. (It will also be posted on this Web site.) The All in the Family homework is due at the next meeting on Nov. 10.
The homework information to earn the special Grandma & Me participation patch (back of the vest) will be posted on this Web site later this week and an e-mail sent to parents. When it is posted on the Web site, it will be written and directed towards the Brownies. (It was about 3 pages to print and at 16 girls, we were trying to save a few trees.). It is not due until after Thanksgiving! The patch can be completed even if a brownie does not have a living grandmother or if the living grandmother lives far away.

Today was the deadline to participate in the optional magazine and/or candy & nut sales.
Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts will receive 40% of each magazine sold.
Troop 2082 will earn 10% from each magazine sold.
Troop 2082 will also receive $1 for each box of candy or nuts sold.
Girls who sold either two magazine or two boxes of candy or nuts will receive a special polar bear patch. Troop 2082 members who participated in the sale were: Bella, Emily D., Erin, Madison, Talia, & Tovah. Some girls earned more than 1 patch (back of the best).
I will post at a later time how much the troop earned!

TRY-IT WORK: All in the Family

DUE: Nov. 10th Meeting
1) With your parents, identify birthdays (just dates not years) for immediate members of your family (mother, father, sisters, brothers, grandparents).
If you want you can do aunts, uncles and cousins, but that is optional.
The girls will be working on a family calendar/arts & crafts project beginning at our next meeting on November 10th. They will need this list to do the project.
You may also send in photographs of immediate family members.
THESE PHOTOS WILL BE CUT!!! So do not send in a prized family photo!
Photos are optional to complete the project.
2) With your daughter, find out about your family’s heritage.
Did your family come from another state? Which one?
Did your parents, grandparents or great-grandparents come from another country? Which country? Look at a map and find out where that country is. Which continent?
